How to Judge the Quality of DTF Inks for Your DTF Printer: A Complete Guide

2026-05-08
When running a DTF printer (Direct-to-Film printer), ink quality is the single most important factor that determines your transfer results, production efficiency, and customer satisfaction. Whether you own a Fedar DTF printer or another direct to film printer, using inferior inks can lead to clogged printheads, poor adhesion, faded colors, and unhappy clients. This article explains the key criteria for evaluating DTF ink quality, helping you make the right choice for your direct to film printer.
1. Color Vibrancy & Opacity
High-quality DTF ink delivers bright, saturated colors with excellent opacity, especially for the white ink base.
Test method: Print a design on PET film and transfer it onto a black cotton T-shirt.
What to look for: The white underbase should completely hide the black fabric, and the top colors should pop without looking dull or washed out.
Cheap inks often produce translucent white or muddy colors, ruining the final product.

2. Fluidity & Clog-Free Performance
Good DTF ink flows smoothly through the printhead without frequent clogs. This is critical for any DTF printer, but especially for high-production direct to film printers.
Test method: Print a large solid area (e.g., A3 size full coverage) and observe if there are missing nozzles or banding.
What to look for: Consistent jetting, no dropouts, and easy cleaning when the printer sits idle overnight.
Inferior inks contain oversized pigment particles or unstable solvents, leading to repetitive clogs and wasted time. Fedar DTF printers are engineered for high-fluid inks, but even the best machine struggles with poor-quality consumables.

3. Adhesion & Stretchability
The ink must bond firmly with the hot-melt adhesive powder and then with the fabric. A quality DTF ink creates a flexible, stretchfollowing film.
Test method: After transferring onto a stretchy fabric (e.g., sportswear jersey), stretch the fabric 50% and release.
What to look for: The print should return to shape with no cracks, no peeling, and no white “crazing” lines.
Poor inks become brittle after curing; they crack the first time the garment is worn or washed.

4. Wash Fastness (Durability)
Customers expect transfers to survive multiple home and industrial washes.
Test method: Wash the printed garment at 40°C (104°F) for 5 cycles, or use a washing machine with standard detergent.
What to look for: No fading, no edge peeling, and no colour bleeding into adjacent fabrics.
Premium DTF inks achieve level 4-5 wash fastness (on a scale of 1-5). Low-grade inks may look fine initially but fail after two or three washes.

5. Soft Hand Feel
Nobody wants a heavy, plastic-like print. Quality DTF ink, combined with the right powder, produces a soft, breathable finish.
Test method: After heat pressing, feel the printed area with your eyes closed. Compare it to the unprinted fabric.
What to look for: Minimal tactile difference – the print should not be stiff, thick, or rubbery.
Cheap inks often require excessive powder or create a thick film because the ink itself has poor self-leveling properties.

6. Eco-Friendliness & Odor
Reputable DTF inks are water-based pigment inks with low VOC (volatile organic compounds) and no harsh solvents.
Test method: Smell the ink directly from the bottle and during printing.
What to look for: Little to no offensive odor. Strong chemical smells indicate cheap solvents that may harm your health and damage printhead components.

Why Fedar Recommends Only Certified DTF Inks
As a trusted Fedar DTF printer manufacturer, we have tested hundreds of ink formulations. Our direct to film printer systems achieve best results when paired with inks that meet the six criteria above. Using uncertified inks voids performance guarantees and leads to premature printhead failure. For trouble-free production and long-lasting, vibrant transfers, always source your DTF inks from reliable suppliers.
